Las Vegas, NV – Republican candidate for Nevada’s 4th Congressional District, Sam Peters,

is demanding that the Clark County School District Trustees and the Superintendent the District, Jesus Jara, explain why the parent of a 15 year old high school student was unable to vocalize what her daughter was assigned to memorize, and recite before her classmates, during public commentary at a recent board meeting.

The concerned parent’s public commentary was interrupted and her microphone was subsequently silenced after she began reading the assignment her daughter was required to complete. The video of the mother’s public commentary has since gone viral with two million views currently on Twitter.

Peters shared the following statement regarding the incident:

“It is incredibly concerning when a parent must raise the question of the inappropriateness of high school assignments with school board personnel, and the response from leadership is silencing the parents’ concerns.  It is more concerning when the given assignment is quite possibly a criminal one.

School districts have a duty to protect students while school is in session and minors are under their care.  Parents must have a reasonable expectation that their children will be protected and not sexually exploited while in public school.  And when they bring the very assignment in front of the school board and they’re subsequently shut down because of the assignment content, you know there is a serious problem.  If the material is so salacious that it had to be silenced by the school board in a public forum among adults, how on earth could it be appropriate for minors.

It is imperative that the Clark County School Police Department, the Clark County Sheriff’s Department, and the Attorney General of Nevada launch an immediate investigation to determine the severity of the harm done to the child involved and the other children possibly affected, but not mentioned. Nevada Revised Statute 200.508 defines child abuse, neglect & endangerment – this situation may very well rise to this level of crime.

This entire situation reeks of immorality and illuminates the darkness permeating our society.  Our children deserve better and it is our responsibility to protect them.”
