President Trump insulted Rep. Elijah Cummings on Twitter and said that compared to the Mexican border that his “Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous. His district is considered the Worst in the USA.”
Immediately, cable news rushed to label Trump a racist. Speaker Nancy Pelosi stood up and called Cummings “a beloved leader in Baltimore, and deeply valued colleague. We all reject racist attacks against him and support his steadfast leadership.”
Senator Elizabeth Warren then called his tweets “ugly and racist. Beto O’Rourke chastised him as “the most openly racist president we’ve had in modern history.” The thing is… President Trump did not comment on Rep. Elijah Cummings’ skin color. He talked about his failed legislative history and weak political leadership.
It seems from a distance that the President is right, too.
Baltimore is an example of systematic urban failure. It has the highest crime rate and the second-highest violent crime rate. Worse. It is the murder capital of the United States with 50 homicides per 100,000 people, according to the New York Post.
“You would think that you were in a Third World country,” said Senator Bernie Sanders about Representative Cummings’s district in 2015. “There are hundreds of buildings that are uninhabitable.”
“Residents of Baltimore’s poorest boroughs have lifespans shorter than people living under dictatorship in North Korea. That is a disgrace.”
Watch what even the Mayor of Baltimore Catherine Pugh said about the city in this video.

Many in news and politics have said that pointing out that Elijah Cummings district has a crime problem is racist. Many say Rep. Cummings has no control over local issues like trash pickup and crime. This is false. Cummings is a Democrat powerbroker and has been a part of the corrupt political machine that has birthed Baltimore’s misery.
Representative Cummings has been in office for four decades and it saddens me to see a part of America that is in such deep despair. This will never happen when I am your Congressman. I am running for Congress to fight for the people of my district. I will listen to you and I will fight to make sure that people are not forced to live in such needlessly miserable conditions.
This is America. We should be proud of this country and we should join together to solve the issues that face us. I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and unlike Rep. Cummings actually fighting beside the people of my district against corruption and government waste.
